God’s Great Outdoor Adventures – 2013 Youth Turkey Hunt

YOUTH HUNT1KENTUCKY (4/10/13) – Hello again folks! I hope you are having a blessed week. We asked for it, and we have received it. Spring has arrived with beautiful weather and thundering gobbles. It’s sad to say that the turkeys are not the only thing thundering.

We are expecting some severe weather over the next couple of days, so be careful as you head out to scout for those turkeys.

Regular season opens this Saturday, on the 13th of April. I hope everyone has a great season. Sportsman for Christ has already had a great start to the season. We had our youth hunters out and they laid some turkeys down for a dirt nap.

Every year at our annual outdoor outreach extravaganza we give away a deer hunt and a turkey hunt. This year’s winner was Miss Emma Baggett. She is 9-years-old and lives in the Rumsey/ Calhoun area. Her dad, Lean, joined us on the hunt as well. It was a long night for me after working until 2 am and driving straight to Calhoun to pick them up, and then over to Philpot to meet up with Sportsmen For Christ prostaffers Brent and Hunter Askins. We decided to hunt a new farm in Daviess County. It paid off well.

At first light we had about ten birds gobbling as they flew down and came across the river, straight to the decoys. Emma was very nervous, as it was her first time hunting. She did an awesome job. I was having a time trying to get the two birds separated so she could get a shot. At 20 yards the ole bird strutted his stuff and spit and drummed the whole time. Finally they separated just long enough for me to call the shot and Emma to bare down on his white head and squeeze the trigger. The bird was down and everyone was celebrating. We finished with some pictures and made the trip back to their truck at Calhoun.

Lean and Emma were very excited because Emma killed her first turkey on her mom's birthday. On behalf of Sportsmen for Christ, we would like to thank all of our sponsors, Tim Grounds, Brent Askins, Hunter Askins, and the property owners for helping us make this hunt a huge success.

Until next week God bless and be safe.
