BENTON, Ky. (1/29/13) – Benton Middle School Girls basketball teams have ended their 2012 – 2013 regular season and it is very clear all three teams enjoyed success during the season. Below is a recap of the 6th, 7th and 8th grade BMS girls’ seasons, they are coached by Keith Bell and Laurice Mitchell.

The BMS 8th grade girls team ended their season with an overall record of 27 – 2. The 8th grade girl’s regular season district record was 8 – 0. BMS hosted the 8th grade District tournament where the BMS 8th grade girls wanted another chance to avenge last year’s championship game loss to Murray.

The opponent of the #1 seed, BMS, in the semi-final game was Calloway who had beaten North Marshall to advance. The semi-final game was a closely fought battle where at the end of the 1st quarter the score was Calloway 5-BMS 4. BMS came out strong in the 2nd quarter opened up a small lead at halftime 13 – 7. In the third quarter, BMS did not score a field goal however they went to the free throw line 8 times where they converted 6 opportunities. Calloway held their own, but they still trailed BMS 19 – 14 at the end of the third quarter. In the final quarter, Calloway’s aggressive play racked up fouls and put BMS players on the free throw line 12 times. BMS made 8 of those chances and held on to a 29 – 22 victory which placed them in the championship game against South Marshall who had beaten Murray in their semi-final match up.

The championship game pitted two Marshall County teams against each other in Benton and South Marshall. Both teams came out strong but BMS ended up with a two point lead, 9 – 7 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, BMS switched to some full court zone pressure for several minutes and caused several turn overs. BMS was only able to convert one of those turnovers for a field goal. The score at halftime was BMS 15 -South Marshall 9. In the third quarter, BMS brought the full court pressure again and caused South Marshall players to turn the ball over multiple times. BMS was able to convert several turnovers into field goals and took a commanding 32 – 12 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the final quarter, BMS and South Marshall made player substitutions so that all players were able to experience the championship game atmosphere. The final score was BMS 41- South Marshall 21.

The BMS 7th grade girls enjoyed a successful season also. Their final season record was 16 – 5. The Benton Middle School 7th grade girls team emerged as the District champion after two hard fought victories. This is the fourth year in a row that Benton Middle School has won the 7th grade girls district basketball tournament.

BMS and North Marshall played in the semi-final where BMS came away with a victory and the right to play Murray in the championship game. Murray and BMS had split two games in the regular season so the match up in the championship game looked to be a hard fought battle. BMS played a strong defensive game emerged as a 32 – 16 winner and 7th grade girls District champs.

The BMS 6th grade girls enjoyed great success in the 2012-2013 season where they earned an undefeated record of 13 – 0. While these 6th grade girls played a reduced number of games, they also played on the 7th grade team during the season. The experience of playing older players this season should help to prepare them for next season.

In summary, 2012 – 2013 was a great season for the BMS girls’ basketball teams. Their combined records resulted in a 56 – 7 record. If you combine last season’s BMS 7th and 8th grade records with this year’s combined record, the result is an overall record of 95 – 13 over two years. Fans should be excited about the potential and future of girls’ basketball in Marshall County when these girls combine with the players from the other two Marshall County middle schools at Marshall County High School in the upcoming years.

Coach Bell and Coach Mitchell are very proud of the accomplishments of these girls; they have worked very hard and put in a ton of time to earn the results above.
