Kidz in Da Zone – Orphans and Orphanages Around the World

KidzEBakerOWENSBORO, Ky. (4/29/13) – This is the Seventh and final in a series of columns submitted to SurfKY News from the youth of Majesty Christian Academy in Owensboro, KY. This article, authored by Elizabeth Baker, speaks on the global concept of orphans.

Around the world, many children do not have a family or even a parent or family member that can take care of them. Sometimes, it’s due to finances. Some parents have been killed or perhaps they are not fit to raise children and so these children are usually placed in orphanages. There are a lot more reasons that a child is in an orphanage.

Sadly, orphanages shut down or can’t take care of some children because no one is willing to raise an orphan. When a child in an orphanage stays there too long or gets too old for the orphanage, they are sent to yet another orphanage. This happens again and again until they turn 18. Then, they have to go out into the world by themselves. Many of these children suffer because they have no money or food; so, they have to try and get a job. Many are simply rejected by the world.

In June of 2009 in Rangoon, Burma, near the Thai border, at least 90 children, including 30 orphans, were killed by war. Those that survived were horrified by the ravages of what they saw and experienced. They were trapped by soldiers and forced to flee in the middle of the night.

In different countries, some orphanages make money off of their orphans through “human trafficking.” The government makes it difficult to adopt because the orphanages make money through government funds.

My mom’s best friend adopted an orphan girl named Nadia from a Russian orphanage. My mom says, “Thousands of dollars were spent and a couple of years went by before my friend and her husband were able to adopt Nadia, even at 12-years-old. This was because of government controls. She was behind her peers intellectually. I can remember my friend saying that one of Nadia’s staple diets was just plain salt.”

Thousands of orphans, approximately 10 and up, usually don’t get adopted because of their age. All of those children hurt… because they have no one to care for them.

In Matthew 19:14, Jesus said, “Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” In His Word, God says many things about orphans. In Zechariah 7:10, the Lord says, “And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor.”

The solution to this problem is to help the orphans get adopted internationally by lifting government controls, educating the parents about the value of the children, and donating things to them to make them enlightened and happy because many don’t have everything children should have, including parents.
