WK Outdoors – Are the Fish Biting?

fishfront 300WESTERN KY (4/9/13) – Over the past few years, the fish have seemed to slow down a bit. Some blame it on the weather. Others say that it is simply local waters’ fish population dropping. Regardless of the reason from former years, the 2013 fishing season is a whole new game.

Most local anglers have already discovered that this year is far more fishing-oriented than the last few years. The WK Outdoors crew has discovered, and has received reports from numerous other fishermen, that this year has produced far more fish and many considerably larger catches than before. Why? Who knows, and who cares? WK Outdoors would like to drop a few tips on where, when and how to catch the big fast-biting fish.

The rules for Crappie fishing are, for the most part, normal. Our staff is catching a lot of Crappie around submerged sticks, trees, and other such foliage. As for the depth, most of the Crappie we’re catching this year are around four feet deep, or deeper. The best bait, so far, has proved to be minnows and twirl-tail jigs. The most popular jig colors this year are white or green, or a mix of the two.

The best-biting fish so far this season has proven to be that of bass. Huge bass, in large numbers, are being caught around the state of Kentucky. The best bait is hard to pinpoint. An equal numbers are being caught on minnows and jigs. A very very successful type of bait right now is that of top water insect-like lures. The top locations, again, are around brush. Another great location this year is where trees are hanging over the water, as the bass are sitting there waiting for insects to fall off the limbs.

Bluegill are going mad! The bluegill population is on a very definite rise. Large bluegill are being caught in waters where some anglers have not caught bluegill before. These are also focusing on top-water insect-like lures, as well as the traditional nightcrawlers. If you are using nightcrawlers, make sure to leave enough of one end of the worm off the hook so it can move, attracting attention.

Bowfin and Gar are also hitting very good this year. These are biting mostly on cut-bait and shad guts, as well as chicken liver. Both are more aggressive this year and less fearful than the prior years.

Stripes are hitting! They aren’t as large as they seem to have been in the past, but there does seem to be a jump in the population of stripes, white bass and hybrids.

The weather this time of year can be kind of iffy, but don’t let that stop you. Yours truly teamed up with local anglers Bo Masden and TJ Ward a couple of weeks ago during a rainy day to fish a tributary off the Green River. We got extremely wet! On the upside, however, our total fish caught within a half-day fishing trip was 104. This included bass, bluegill, crappie, stripes, smallmouth bass and more. This was the best fishing trip we all had in years. So, that in mind, don’t let Mother Nature talk you out of fishing this season!
