Mobile Apps to Keep You Safe in the Summer Heat

appoftheweek orange 300LEXINGTON, Ky (6/27/13) – With rising temperatures and scorching heat indexes seeping their way into the Commonwealth, it's more important than ever to stay safe during the hot summer days to come. Along with these heat waves comes a new wave of technology that can keep you informed and protected when your outdoor thermometer begins to skyrocket.

A number of mobile applications are available for download that can put temperatures and safety precautions in the palm of your hand. Listed below are some of these must-download apps that will keep you prepared for the hottest of conditions.

1.Beat the Heat – This app allows you to calculate the recommended sun exposure time, as well as the maximum sun exposure time, for your skin type. Beat the Heat will also locate where you are and calculate the current UV index in your area. The app provides tips that can help you gauge how much time you should spend in the sun and just how much sun is too much. All calculations are provided by the World Health Organization.

2. OSHA Heat Safety Tool – This app, from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration calculates the heat index for work sites to ensure the safety of workers. It provides precautions to prevent heat illness and gives you access to safety information wherever and whenever you need it. Based on the calculated heat index, the app will develop an estimated risk level for outdoor workers and offer reminders about protective measures, including drinking enough fluids and scheduling rest breaks.

3. Heat Index and Relative Humidity – This app provides a tool that measures the perceived temperature and relative humidity. By entering the air temperature and dew point, the heat index and relative humidity are calculated at the touch of a button. The app will also provide warnings based on the calculated heat category and gives an extended weather forecast for the coming days. These measurements are taken from the NOAA's National Weather Service Heat Index Chart.

4. Weather Calculator and Converter – This app will calculate weather conditions and convert weather units. It will convert units such as Fahrenheit, Celsius, Kelvin, meters, feet, and many more. The app also includes a number of weather calculators, including heat index, wind chill, and vapor pressure.

5. Zyrtec Allergy Cast – For the allergy sufferer in all of us, this app can help you to better understand and manage your allergy symptoms. It provides the pollen index and extended weather forecasts, and alerts you to when pollen counts are high in your area. You can log your symptoms and track how you are feeling, as well as get tips on the best ways to deal with allergies.
