Five New Graduates Receive College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships

scholarship purple 300LEXINGTON, Ky (7/16/2013)— The National Merit Scholarship Corp. has released the winners of more than 2,500 awards financed by U.S. colleges and universities, including five 2013 seniors from Fayette County Public Schools who are among the 68 Kentucky graduates in this latest group of scholarship recipients.

Congratulations to these students, with their probable field of study noted:

Abraham Dutch, Henry Clay High School, computer science, University of Kentucky

Corrine Elliott, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, mathematics, University of Kentucky

Deborah Ferguson, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, physics, University of Kentucky

Abhyudit Rohin Lohe, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, engineering, Harvey Mudd College (Claremont, Calif.)

Casey Ren, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, neurosurgery, University of Southern California

Officials from nearly 200 sponsor colleges selected their winners from among the finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. Additional winners will be released July 15.

Recipients of corporate-sponsored awards were announced April 24 (none in Fayette County Public Schools), and winners of National Merit $2,500 Scholarships on May 8. By the end of this year’s competition, about 8,000 outstanding students will have earned National Merit Scholarships worth more than $35 million.

The competition began with about 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools. Semifinalists were the highest-scoring students in each state and represented less than 1 percent of the nation’s seniors. FCPS had 27 semifinalists in the running for 2013. Generally, about 90 percent of semifinalists advance, and more than half receive awards.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. is a not-for-profit entity established in 1955 to conduct this annual scholarship program. The awards are underwritten by NMSC, universities, and business organizations.
