MothersDay707y070KENTUCKY (5/11/13) –  Motherhood is observed and honored in different ways by different countries. Mother’s Day commonly falls on the second Sunday in the month of May.

Celebrations of motherhood can be linked back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals to honor the Goddesses of Cybele and Rhea. However, the modern model for Mother’s Day is the Christian Festival known as “Mothering Sunday.” Once a big holiday in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was seen as the time the faithful would return to their “mother church” for special services. Our time, this tradition progressed into a more worldly holiday. This custom gradually faded and merged into the American tradition of Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.

In 1908, Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis, but the American incarnation of Mother’s Day didn’t become an official holiday until 1914 where President Woodrow Wilson officially established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Anna, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, conceived Mother’s Day as a way to honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their families. After she was able to gain some financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner John Wanamaker, she was able to organize the first official Mother’s Day celebration  at a Methodist Church in West Virginia in May of 1908. By 1912, many states and towns had picked up on this celebration and became an annual holiday.

Disgruntled on how Mother’s Day was becoming so commercialized, Anna disowned the holiday all together and actively lobbied the government to have this holiday removed from the American Calendar.
 
Traditionally, Mother’s Day is celebrated with presenting flowers, cards, candies and other type of gifts to show our appreciation.
