steve meredithGREENVILLE, Ky. (11/4/13) — Muhlenberg Community Hospital hires new CEO to bolster business structure. Steve Meredith has been hired as interim CEO for MCH. He fills the position most recently held by John Countzler.

Meredith spoke with Surfky News Friday, Nov. 1, about the changes at the executive level of MCH, and explained what priorities will be at the top of his list as plans move forward during his tenure at MCH.

"We appreciate the hard work and dedication that John gave to the position," Meredith said. "The recommendation to put someone different in the CEO position is in no way a reflection upon John. He has had years of experience in health care, but not as a CEO. The healthcare industry is in such turmoil right now that every hospital is being compromised and challenged." Meredith emphasized.

"I've been in healthcare for almost 40 years," Meredith noted. "Most recently I served as the CEO of Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center in Leitchfield for nearly 30 years. Coming into my present position here at MCH I see my No. 1 priority to achieve financial stability. And that's not just specific to Muhlenberg County. I don't know of a single hospital in the state of Kentucky that's making money right now. My whole health career has been in dealing with the problems and solutions when it comes to healthcare in rural communities. No one understands or appreciates this better than I do. What has happened recently in relation to Obamacare is a real challenge, especially to smaller, rural hospitals." Meredith stressed.

Meredith added, however, that in his opinion, MCH has some very strong points, and he noted that his plan is to build on those strengths going forward.

"I think we can right this ship by July," Meredith added. "I feel we can be in a positive financial position by then. We plan to take our time in finding a new CEO that has the background and experience that suits MCH."
