HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (5/14/13) – The Hopkins County Board of Education is holding the final interviews for selection of the new School System Superintendent replacing former Superintendent James Stevens.
The interviews of the four finalists take place Monday, May 13 and Tuesday May 14 at two special called meetings that are closed to public or press. SurfKY News posted a report on the final applicants with information provided by the Board.

Up to the first week in May, the matter of who the applicants are for the position has remained very private within the board, as it is not a public matter, rather one of a private occupation/applicant selection just like any other employer. The four final applicants were announced via the aforementioned article SurfKY News posted on May 7:
- Rob Clayton Principal, South Oldham Middle School, Crestwood, KY
- Matthew Constant Assistant Superintendent, Owensboro Public Schools, Owensboro, KY
- Rita Cook Superintendent, Middlesboro Independent Public Schools, Middlesboro, KY
- Linda Zellich Deputy Superintendent, Hopkins County Public Schools, Madisonville, KY
Two of the four applicants screened are interviewing privately at Monday’s board meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Hopkins Co. Board of Education Building on South Seminary Street and the other two will be interviewed the next night, Tuesday. There will not be a decision reached until each applicant finalist has been properly screened, interviewed and offered a contract for review.
The hiring/interview board present for the closed meeting interviews consists of five members. Also present will be the Board attorney, Keith Cartwright. Current Deputy Superintendent Linda Zellich has submitted her application for the position, and she is the only finalist applicant who is currently part of the Hopkins County school system.
When asked if that would make any difference as far as favor in the hiring process, board member Steve Faulk agreed with board attorney Keith Cartwright when he said, “There will be no favor granted to any applicant for any reason other than who the board determines is the best candidate for the job.” Faulk included, “We have a list to follow and the screening process will directly reflect the care we take in election.”
The board has an indefinite amount of time to reach a decision on who they elect for the position. They will notify interested parties, and SurfKY News will promptly update the public.
