100 candle cupcake 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (2/3/14) – The Kentucky State Senate today adjourned in honor of Corria Mimms upon the occasion of her 100th birthday.

“I could not let today go by without honoring Mrs. Mimms,” said Senator Jerry P. Rhaods, D-Madisonville, who sponsored Senate Resolution 108 honoring Mimms.  “Not only are we recognizing Mrs. Mimms on her birthday, but also for her decades of public service in the teaching of students.”

Mrs. Mimms, a native Kentuckian of Hopkins County for the past 93 years, was born on Feb 3, 1914.

In 1956, she attended the commencement ceremony for her son, Ronald, at Kentucky State University in Frankfort.

Following that ceremony, they immediately drove to her own commencement at Morehouse College in Atlanta, accomplishing a rare feat of mother and son graduating from college in the same year.

Retired from the Earlington Public School System, she taught fourth grade for 30 years.

Her husband, the late Lester Mimms, was the first African American to be appointed principal of an integrated public school in Kentucky.

Active in her community, Mrs. Mimms played piano for Mount Zion Baptist Church choirs for more than 80 years, and she volunteered at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville for three decades.

Senator Rhoads is pleased to report that she remains in good health to this day.
