OVC GRAY 300MURRAY, Ky. (3/26/13) – After throwing the first nine-inning no hitter in Murray State history, junior Cameron Finch was honored as the Louisville Slugger Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week, as well as the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Monday.

Finch (Collierville, Tenn.) added his name to a list of seven other individuals who tossed seven-inning no hitters in their MSU careers. It was also the first MSU no hitter since Rich Garner against Tennessee Tech on April 22, 1986.

He finished the game by striking out five, and walking four, while throwing only 96 pitches.

Finch got off to a quick start as he retired the first six hitters that faced. He allowed a leadoff walk in the third and hit a batter with one out in the fourth, he did not allow either base runner to get past second base. He needed only seven pitches to retire the side in the fifth.

After the Breds scored the only run of the game in the sixth, Finch ran into a little trouble in the bottom of the inning as he surrendered a one-out walk and uncorked a wild pitch. Not bothered by the situation, Finch got the next two hitters to groundout to end the threat.

Just about every no hitter requires and outstanding defensive play, and this one was no different as second baseman Dylan Wheeler robbed a sure leadoff single up the middle in the seventh with an unbelievable diving stop for the out. It was the first of three groundouts to second on just six pitches in the inning.

Finch also had to dance around a little trouble in the eighth as a leadoff walk and a two-out fielding error put runners on the corners with two outs. He quickly got ahead of the next hitter and got a weak grounder to short to end the inning.

The ninth inning was more of the same for Finch as a leadoff walk was followed by a sacrifice bunt. But, a groundout to third and lineout to center field ended the game and cemented Finch’s name in the MSU record books.

For Finch, it was the second complete game in his career, and the second time he was honored as the OVC pitcher of the week.
