KENTUCKY (4/19/14) — Geodes are not so pretty on the outside, but when cracked open, they are beautiful on the inside.
Our “Science Guy” Jason Lindsey with Hooked on Science and a kid scientist show us how you can use a few ingredients from around the house to turn an ordinary egg into a geode.
How to use a few ingredients from around the house to turn an ordinary egg into a geode:
- 12 Eggs
- Food Coloring
- STEP 1: Crack each egg near the narrow end. Remove the shell near the top of each egg and then pour the contents into the trash.
- STEP 2: Add two cups of water into a saucepan, add food coloring, and then mix.
- STEP 3: Add borax to the saucepan until the water is super saturated with borax.
- STEP 4: Once the water starts boiling, pour the contents in the saucepan, into each egg, allow the water to evaporate, and observe.
As the water evaporates from the eggs, borax crystals deposit on the sides of the eggs, creating geode eggs.Go to www.hookedonscience.org for more experiments that might get you and your family “Hooked on Science.”
