rital dukes smith 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/1/13) – SurfKY News is very happy to introduce our newest reporter, Rita Dukes Smith.

Smith has many years’ worth of experience in the news industry, making her a vital addition to the SurfKY Staff.

"I've worked at two daily newspapers and three weeklies," said Smith. "A common frustration is having to wait for a day or even a week to tell a story. That's the nature of the print industry. However, being able to cover an event and having the ability to report that story almost instantly, is very rewarding."

Smith was the editor of Leader-News in Central City for almost 11 years from 2002 to 2013. The Leader-News is the largest weekly newspaper in western Kentucky.

Prior to that, she was a reporter and copy editor for The Messenger of Madisonville from 1999 to 2001 and attained the position of lead reporter in 2002.

Most recently, Smith created and published her own weekly newspaper, the Western Kentucky Review. “After closing the paper earlier this month, the job opening at SurfKY felt like a welcome mat at the door,” said Smith.

"I can't say enough about the professionalism of the SurfKY staff and the respect they've shown me as I start this new venture," she said. "I also was amazed and impressed at the vastness of SurfKY's fast, free news coverage throughout the state and am excited to be a part of it."

It is with great pleasure that SurfKY News welcomes Rita to our staff. We are certain that she will be a valuable asset, bringing timely and accurate news to our readers.
