VFW Inviting Community to Walk for Cancer

vfw ladies aux 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/4/13) – The Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 5480 Ladies Auxiliary group of Madisonville is hosting their first formal fundraising Walk for Cancer. The walk route will begin at the VFW building location in Madisonville at 201 McLeod Lane on Saturday, April 13, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. It will continue through a 2.2 mile circle back to the post upon completion.

Members of the VFW, the Ladies Auxiliary group, friends, family, and men and women in the Hopkins County community, along with members from out of county posts and communities alike, are invited to participate in the walk and take pledges of which will all proceed to the VFW Cancer Aid and Research program. If you are a member of another post, you may take pledges for your home post Cancer Aid and Research program. There is no fee for registration to walk. Each participant will have the option to take donations or pledges to contribute and may walk as many laps as pledges in the four hour period. There will be refreshments served at noon at the post to rehydrate participants after the walk. Anyone interested may register on the day of the walk before they start their route.

“This is the largest charity we fund,” said Kaye Sellers, Ladies Auxiliary Chairperson. “This is the first year for the walk, but we’re hoping to have many more to come.”

The Ladies Auxiliary group of Post 5480 plays an active role in community service in Hopkins Co. “We host and contribute to all sorts of different things going on in the community,” continued Sellers. “We take children’s fund collections to aid in financing community children who need it. We host “Loyalty Day” annually in May at the veteran’s clinic in Hanson. We have lots of Memorial Day celebrations, and we put up flags at different activities for that every year. We just donated to Project Graduation events at both Madisonville North Hopkins High and Hopkins County Central High. We like to be involved, and we hope the community will come and get involved with us. We’re always welcoming ladies to join the Auxiliary group here. They can pick up an application and eligibility form here at the post, and we’ll give them a tour.” There are currently over 35 members of the group at Post 5480.

In the case of inclement weather, the walk will be re-scheduled for April 27.
