Runners Rock the Run the Bluegrass Races

rtb finishLEXINGTON, Ky. (3/30/13) – Keeneland is normally reserved for horse races, but runners of the two-legged variety convened at the property for the Run the Bluegrass half-marathon on March 30. Competitors from five countries and more than 40 states ran through historic thoroughbred farms in what is touted as one of America’s prettiest half-marathons.

In addition to the 13.1-mile course, there was a seven-mile option and a kid’s race that was a little less than one mile long. Glen Mays, 42, won the half-marathon with a time of 1:14:08. Andrew Miller, 23, won the seven-miler with a time of 00:54:16.

Sally Corrigan, 48, was the first runner of the day to cross the finish line. Her 00:55:22 time placed her fifth in the seven-miler.

Corrigan is a triathlete who does 5ks on the weekend, but this was her first time running seven miles. She said the notoriously hilly course was particularly challenging.

“I ran in high school and I just started again three years ago,” she said. “I took a twenty year break.”

Two racers got a particularly happy ending at the finish line. After they crossed the line together, Bill Beckerson took the microphone from the announcer, got down on one knee, and proposed to Mary Dowdy. The pair met when they both joined Georgetown College’s cross-country team.
