Planned Parenthood Kentucky and Indiana Merger May Mean Expanded Services

infant careLEXINGTON Ky, (6/11/13)—On July 1 the Kentucky and Indiana Planned Parenthood affiliates will merge into one organization, which could potentially expand services in Kentucky.

The new non-profit will be referred to as Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky and will serve 28 centers across the two states. Kim Greene, chair of Planned Parenthood of Kentucky’s board of directors, said that the merge came from changes in the health care landscape brought on by the Affordable Care Act.

“Most of us know what those changes are individually, but for organizations there is another layer,” she said.

With the operating systems and other necessities needed to run a clinic the expenses are high, especially for a small organization like Planned Parenthood of Kentucky. There are two Planned Parenthood centers in the state, one in Louisville and one in Lexington.

“That’s why we thought that the merger with the Indiana affiliate would make a lot more sense and they agreed,” said Greene.

According to Greene, it wasn’t long ago that there were 200 Planned Parenthood affiliates across the country, now there is just 73.

“We are just kind of joining a trend,” she said.

Greene said she has big dreams for the merger.

“It has been one of our dreams to expand our region to other parts of the state because we know from government statistics that the need for family planning services and preventive healthcare is really severe,” she said. “So, we are really looking forward to this expansion.”
