LEXINGTON, Ky. (7/29/13)—On Saturday, Aug. 3, Lexington mothers will be participating in the fifth annual international breastfeeding event: The Big Latch On. Participants will try to set a record for the most children breastfeeding simultaneously in Kentucky.
“Moms and babies around the bluegrass are invited to attend,” said Ruth Jameson of Lexington’s La Leche League. ”They will celebrate breastfeeding and meet other breastfeeding moms.”
Women all over the world will gather at 10:30 a.m. in their time zone to take part in this synchronized breastfeeding event. World Breastfeeding Week, Aug. 1-7, is celebrated in 120 countries and marks the signing of the WHO/UNICEF document Innocent Declaration, which lists the benefits of breastfeeding and global and governmental goals to promote breastfeeding.
“In 2012, 8,862 children were counted breastfeeding as part of the Global Big Latch On,” said Jameson. “This year we are aiming for even higher numbers.”
Lexington’s Big Latch On event is sponsored by La Leche League of Greater Lexington, Baby Moon and the LFUCG Health Department and will be held on the lawn in front of Baby Moon at Shelton Place, 2891 Richmond Road, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
“We encourage moms of all ages and their babies to come out and take part in the event,” said Jameson. “It is a good way to celebrate the benefits of breastfeeding and meet people who are experiencing the same thing as you.”
Breastfeeding contributes to the normal growth and development of babies and children; decreases risk of infant morbidity and mortality, adult obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis premenopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer (for both mom and baby), according to the Health Department. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby's life to optimize these benefits and continuing to breastfeed for two years and as long thereafter as is mutually desired by a woman and her child.
Mothers can sign up to participate on the day of the event. For more information contact Ruth Jameson at 859-559-8488.
