Ward, Rogers Win Fifth-Third Bank Tennis Championships

LEXINGTON, Ky. (7/29/13) – Sunday marked the conclusion of the Fifth-Third Bank Tennis Championships at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex, leaving two players who came out on top.

James Ward of Great Britain defeated Australian James Duckworth 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the final match of the men's singles final. The match marked Ward's second trip to the finals of Lexington's signature tennis championships. He was defeated in 2011. He's currently the No. 2 ranked player in his home country.

In the women's singles face-off, Shelby Rogers of Charleston, S.C, took home the trophy against France's Julie Coin, 6-4, 7-6 (3). The win for Rogers signifies her wild-card entry into the U.S Open, after scoring 102 points with her win in Lexington and a semi-finals appearance in Portland, Oregon.

The U.S Open will take place from Aug. 26 to Sept. 9.

SurfKY's David Gillum attended the championship and got the first-hand reactions from the two champions, as well as the runner-ups, moments after their tournaments came to a close.
