Coppélia Scheduled to Open at the Lexington Opera House

cookies 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (4/4/13) – Artistic Director Luis Dominguez is proud to announce the performance of Coppélia on April 13-14, 2013, at the Lexington Opera House. The Lexington Ballet serves the city of Lexington, providing classical ballet training to students, many of whom will be performing alongside the company’s professional dancers in Coppélia.

The Coppélia ballet is based on two stories written by German author E.T.A. Hoffman. The ballet premiered in 1870.

The story is of a life-size mechanical doll, Coppélia, who was created by the mysterious scientist Dr. Coppélius. A villager Franz is intrigued with Coppélia and wants to meet her although he is already engaged to Swanilda. Swanilda finds out that her fiancé Franz is flirting with Coppélia and becomes jealous. Meanwhile, the evil Dr. Coppélius is plotting to steal Franz’ spirit and provide life to Coppélia. Swanilda pretends to be Coppélia to trick Dr. Coppélius and save Franz. It all ends well, when Franz wakes up and Dr. Coppélius discovers he has been fooled and Coppélia is only a doll. The next evening, the whole village dances to celebrate the Duke’s gift of a new church bell.

Coppélia is humorous ballet and appeals to audiences of all ages. It is appropriate for young children and a “Cookies with Coppélia” will be held after each matinee across the street from the Lexington Opera House at Shakespeare and Company. The cost is $5.00. In addition to cookies and lemonade, children will be allowed to visit with and have their photograph taken with the dancers.
