The Dailey Dose: A Man On A Mission To Make Lexington Laugh

whisman 300LEXINGTON, Ky (6/12/13)— As a kid Rob Whisman, 24, knew exactly what he wanted to do when he grew up. At the age of eight he started performing his first stand-up comedy routine in front of his family.

“It’s what I’ve always wanted to do with my life,” Whisman said of comedy. “It may not be the most fiscally sound profession, but making people laugh is what I love to do.”

Boy, does he make people laugh. With over 4,000 followers on Twitter, Whisman has garnered a lot response to his humor, and even made Ellen DeGeneres laugh a few weeks ago on her show.

“Through Twitter I’ve built a friendship with one of the writers for Ellen,” he said. “He enjoys my tweets and selected one of my most popular jokes to be featured on the show. It was really surreal seeing something I jotted on a cocktail napkin being read on national television by Ellen DeGeneres.”

As his following increases both on and offline, Whisman has made several connections with prominent people in the comedy writing community. He has become friends with the writers for The Daily Show, Key & Peele, Conan, and The Onion. His dream career is to one day work at The Onion, which is a satirical news website that he thinks is hilarious.

“For now, I spend all my free time writing and building a good repertoire online,” he said. “I plan on working in the standup circuit here in Kentucky as soon as I put some final touches on my jokes.”

Some comedians base their humor off of personal experiences or events, but one particular friend inspires Whisman’s humor.

“My humor honestly is built on what makes my friend Laura laugh,” said Whisman. “She has the best laugh and if whatever I say makes her laugh, I know it has to be good.”

Whisman wants to encourage Lexington to support local comedy, and he’d be thrilled for people to come watch him.

“I’ll be making the people of Lexington laugh by the end of the summer,” Whisman said.
