LEXINGTON, Ky. (7/27/13)—Many pet owners will agree that their animals’ health is almost as important as their own. Karen Boden, Kenni Ward and Kathy Campbell know this well, so they opened up a business in October that is improving the health of dogs and horses around the Bluegrass and across the nation.
“For about twenty years I have made dog treats for fun,” said Boden. “Last August however, I proposed we start a business and put Kathy’s equine business degree to work.”
Boden and Campbell were sorority sisters of Theta Chi Alpha at UK and met Ward through mutual friends and have been friends ever since. At age 49 Boden says that the three are inseparable.
“We all have full time jobs but decided that a part time job would give us an opportunity to spend time together,” said Boden.
Hounds and Horses uses only quality human grade natural ingredients for the dog and horse treats. The treats are sold separately and in bundles.
“We make peanut butter, waggin’ wheels and Parmesan cheese flavored treats,” said Boden. “We also sell No Grainers, which are peanut butter and pumpkin flavored, and Colt Crunchy, which the horses love.”
Being dog owners themselves they know exactly what it takes to make a dog happy.
“After adopting a Great Dane last summer, I was told that they have frequent stomach problems,” said Boden. “The healthy, natural ingredients in our treats have prevented him from ever being uncomfortable or sick, he just loves them.”
No worries cat owners, your treats will be coming soon.
“We have had so many people ask for cat treats,” Boden said laughing. “We are in the process of making them and will change our name in the future to Hounds and Horses and Cats.”
“It has met our expectations and more,” Boden said of the growing business. “I am excited to see where it goes.”
Shackleford, a retired chestnut thoroughbred horse that won the 2011 Preakness Stakes is a big fan of Hounds and Horses Colt Crunchy treat.
“His owner order treats all of the time,” said Boden. “A healthy, happy horse is a good horse.”
