Protesters Rally Against Taking Action in Syria

SYRIA1 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (9/12/13) – A small rally was held Wednesday night in downtown Lexington to promote non-intervention in Syria. The protest was hosted at the 9/11 memorial at Centrepointe, and encouraged citizens of Lexington to “help send a message.”

Marla Vice was one of the rally's organizers. She said the rally is about love for her fellow sisters and brothers, fellow Americans and fellow citizens across the world.

“This doesn't just affect the United States, this is about the whole world,” said Vice. “Especially the situation with Syria right now, it could be very dangerous for the whole world. The whole world has their eyes on America now. I think we need to start sending a different message to the rest of the world that we are not the police of the world. We don't want to conquer the whole world. That's not what real American citizens want. We are not with our government on this, and we want people to know that.”

Vice added that she wants local representatives and representatives in Washington to know that they have a lot of people in Kentucky that are watching how they vote on this, and are not supporting the war.

Rikka Wallin is another one of the organizers. She said she's been involved with other rallies and has noticed great feedback from their efforts.

“The war on terrorism is terrorism, and that's why I'm here today,” said Wallin. “We've had lots of positive re-enforcement through honking, and giving us a peace sign and thumbs up. There were 40 of us here the first time, about 25 the second time, and totally different people both times.”

April Browning attended Wednesday's rally, and said she feels the United States has been on the wrong side of justice far too often.

“I hope to accomplish moving our government in a direction that is not as aggressive as it has been. We have no right to claim humanitarian effort any longer,” said Browning. “That has been taken away from us from the past atrocities we've committed in country after country after country.”
