LEXINGTON, Ky. (11/26/13) – Who said miracles were only for the Christmas season?
God's Pantry Food Bank in Lexington is delivering a miracle of their own this Thanksgiving season. The organization held its two-day “Sharing Thanksgiving” food distribution Monday and Tuesday at Broadway Christian Church and St. Luke United Methodist Church. During the event, God's Pantry distributed all of the ingredients required to create a bountiful Thanksgiving meal in the homes of families in need.
Ingredients included turkeys, potatoes, eggs, canned vegetables, canned yams, canned fruits, cranberry sauce, dressing mixes and gravy mixes.
Marian Guinn is the CEO of God's Pantry Food Bank. She said “Sharing Thanksgiving” has a tremendous impact on families across Fayette County who may not be financially stable enough to provide a Thanksgiving meal.
“There are many, many people in this community who struggle on a regular basis with hunger,” said Guinn. “Thanksgiving is a truly great American holiday. I can't imagine anything better or any better way to celebrate than in your own home surrounded by people you care about. This program, because of the generosity of literally thousands of people, enables thousands of families to have that experience.”
Last year, God's Pantry delivered baskets of ingredients to approximately 4,500 Fayette County families.
Carman Turnbull received one of the Thanksgiving baskets for her family this year. She said the food will help her and her family to continue their Thanksgiving tradition of coming together, sitting down and talking about all of their blessings.
“It's a big blessing and it helps a lot when we're not able to afford everything,” said Turnbull. “I just want to tell them thank you. I'm very grateful and really appreciate it.”
God's Pantry is an organization that has been collecting and distributing donated food to agencies across central and eastern Kentucky for 56 years. Today, God's Pantry works with over 275 partner agencies to fight hunger and alleviate the symptoms that accompany it.
