Highway Deaths 01 green 300FRANKFORT, KY (9/9/13) – The following is your weekly update of incident statistics on Kentucky roadways over the past week, courtesy of the Kentucky State Police.
 
Preliminary statistics indicate that 11 people died in nine separate crashes on Kentucky’s roadways from Monday, Sept. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 8.
 
–Two double-fatality, motor vehicle crashes occurred: one in Oldham County and one in Wayne County. One of the Oldham Co. victims was not wearing a seat belt and the crash involved the suspected use of alcohol.
–Two single-fatality, motor vehicle crashes occurred in Jefferson County. One of the victims was not wearing a seat belt and one of the crashes involved the suspected use of alcohol.
–One single-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Bell, Floyd, Mason and Pulaski. The victims in Bell and Pulaski counties were not wearing seat belts.
–One single fatality, motorcycle crash occurred in Greenup County.
 
Through Sept. 8, preliminary statistics indicate that 426 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 82 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 328 motor vehicle fatalities, 164 victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-nine of the 60 motorcycle fatalities were not wearing helmets. The six ATV fatalities were not wearing helmets. One bicycle rider has been killed. Thirty pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 94 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of Sept. 8, Kentucky has had 62 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
