Old Anton School Steeped in History

ANTON, Ky. (9/20/13) – The old Anton School has seen more than six decades of students within its walls. Hopkins County Schools will offer it at auction at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 on site. The 27,875 square-foot building represents fond memories for former students.

Val Hargis, who attended the school during her third through eighth-grade years, fondly remembers teachers like Dixie Martin, Anna Moore, Mildred Vannoy and Principal Byron Watkins.

"Dixie Martin taught fourth-grade for a while but then moved to fifth through eighth as a science teacher," said Hargis. "She taught me to love education. She was so creative and ahead of her time."

Hargis also recalls Joe Hicklin, who was the coach and also taught math and physical education.

The Anton school property includes seven acres of land. The building was constructed in 1949 and an addition made in 1962.

According to Hopkins County Schools Assistant Superintendent Steve Gillum, who is in charge of facilities, the building is suitable to be occupied but will require scattered repairs on some areas like the leaking roof in the old gymnasium. A portion of the window air units still function, he said.

The school was a kindergarten through eighth-grade until 1994, when James Madison Middle School was built. Until two years ago, the facility was used as the Adolescent Day Treatment center for Hopkins County Schools, said Gillum.

While the school building is being auctioned in the morning, other surplus school system property is being auctioned later that afternoon at 110 Sugg St., Madisonville. The second auction includes school buses, a pickup truck, kitchen and cafeteria equipment and school furniture.
