OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/25/13) - Are you using technology or is technology using you? It is so easy to lose track of time commenting on Facebook posts, liking the latest Instagram posts, and scrolling through those up-to-the-minute tweets. With advances in today's technology, there is an app for just about anything! Beyond social media, there are apps for cooking, gaming, and even streaming music. However, SurfKY News spoke to two women who are using their phones to lose weight, not track of time.

Katie Raney is a 22-year-old college graduate who began her diet in January as a New Year’s Resolution. Over the past nine months, Raney has dropped multiple sizes and has lost nearly 50 lbs. She credits using a couple iPhone apps in conjunction which have helped her to meet her fitness goals.

"In the beginning, I used the app 'MyFitnessPal' religiously," Raney claims. "I do not use it as often now because it has trained my mind on how many calories most foods have."

MyFitnessPal allows its users to count calories by logging their daily diets. According to the app's description, MyFitnessPal contains the largest food database of any iPhone calorie counter which includes more than 3 million different foods.

In addition to tracking her calorie intake, Raney says she also makes it a point to go to the gym or run outdoors at least four times per week. When running outdoors, Raney uses the "RunKeeper" app to track her distance, pace and calories burned.

"I set a number of calories to burn during cardio or before I leave the gym," Raney said. "I drink water constantly and rarely eat fast food, which in turn, has saved me money."

Nicole Warmack of Sturgis has been dieting for nearly a year now. She describes her diet as a lifestyle change because 'it is never ending.' Warmack uses the app, "Lose It!" daily in which she logs her weight, caloric intake, as well as calories burned. The app then calculates those numbers and supplies the user with the allotted calories remaining.

"Lose It! is the only nutrition app I used, however, I do use an app called 'MapMyRun' which measures the distance you have run and the calories burned," Warmack said.

Since October of 2012, Warmack has lost more than 80 lbs! Although she is proud of her progress, she claims it is much harder to keep the weight off than it is to lose it.

"I try to eat foods such as salad, tuna, tilapia, chicken, fruit and vegetables a majority of the time," Warmack stated. "But I do allow myself to eat something that's not so strict if I want just as a reward of my hard work."

Raney agrees completely with Warmack's perspective. Raney suggests. though, to have a smaller portion when those cravings are present.

"Don't deprive yourself of anything," Raney said. "I still eat ice cream and chocolate when I crave it, I just watch how much and avoid the temptation by purchasing single servings rather than a larger amount."

For those who are interested in losing weight, both women have some advice beyond using the latest technology. Raney's main suggestion is to not measure your success by the number on a scale.

"Judge your progress on how you feel," Raney explained. "I feel more comfortable because I'm not insecure anymore; I don't feel like I am suffocating in my own body and in this way I am successful."

Warmack laughs as she adds, 'I should eat to live, not live to eat,' which is a quote she reminds herself of daily. Her recommendation for others is to find healthier foods and enjoyable exercises to help lose the weight.

"Be proud when you make healthy choices or when you work out, but don't get discouraged and give up if you don't," Warmack said. "One bad day won't ruin you, just like one good day won't fix you."

The apps: Lose It!, RunKeeper, MyFitnessPal and MapMyRun are all available for download now in the App store. Each of the four apps are free. Link directly to each apps Facebook page here: Lose It!
