Outdoors with Big Country – Youth Turkey Hunting Season

BIG1KENTUCKY (4/4/13) – Many young boys and girls are currently getting fired up and gathering all their camouflage together to get primed for the 2013 Youth Turkey Season weekend in Kentucky.

Turkey hunting is a favorite sport for several folks, even over deer hunting, and now the turkeys are beginning to start strutting and gobbling. The Youth Turkey Season weekend is set by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, with the purpose of getting local youths involved in the great outdoors.

As for rules, all kids hunting must be accompanied by an adult, and, as always, safety is priority, particularly when handling firearms. A safe hunt is a successful hunt.

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a big smile on a kids face wile win the outdoors as they experience some of God’s wild creatures up close. In many cases, some children never get an opportunity to experience such things in the bigger cities.

Big Country urges local hunters to take a kid out this weekend. Be patient and remember that the kids will be quite excited to be out there. I also recommend hunting from a ground blind to help eliminate the obviousness of young excited movement. Make them as comfortable as possible and set them in a place where they can see all the movement and action throughout the hunting area.

Big Country would like to wish everyone the best of luck this season. If you would like your hunting picture to be featured on SurfKY News, take a good picture and send it, along with your information, to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. FISH OF THE WEEK
Big Country is currently featuring local anglers throughout the region in his Fish of the Week section. This week’s Fish of the Week title goes out to 3-year-old Noah Alverson of Ebenezer in Muhlenberg County. On a fishing trip with his Dad, Adam Alverson, on April 2, Noah caught this bass and bluegill in a pond in the Ebenezer area. A big congratulations goes out to Noah!
