LEXINGTON, Ky. (7/22/13) – Kentucky sophomore right-hander Chandler Shepherd has been named a Cape Cod League All-Star, it was announced by the Cape Cod Collegiate Baseball League on Saturday afternoon.
Shepherd, a native of Louisa, Ky., will play in the CCBL All-Star Game on July 27 at Red Wilson Field. First pitch of the prestigious All-Star game is slated for 4:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on Fox College Sports.
Shepherd – who ranks fourth in the Cape in ERA (0.93) – joins a proud recent tradition of Kentucky stars earning Cape Cod All-Star accolades, joining Trevor Gott (2011), Taylor Rogers (2011), Braden Kapteyn (2010), Chad Wright (2010), Chris Bisson (2009), Keenan Wiley (2008), Collin Cowgill (2007) and Antone DeJesus (2007) as UK’s CCBL All-Stars in the last seven summers.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder has dominated the Cape Cod League in his five starts for the Harwich Mariners, where he is teamed with fellow UK standout A.J. Reed. Shepherd has a 2-2 record and a 0.93 ERA in 29 innings, allowing only 16 hits – 12 singles – and seven walks, striking out 27.
Shepherd has allowed earned runs (three) in just one start this summer, a quality six-inning outing at Hyannis. Shepherd opened his summer with 14 consecutive shutout innings and overall, he ranks fourth in the league in ERA (0.93), fifth in strikeouts (27), and 12th in innings pitched (29).
Shepherd is one of four Southeastern Conference players to earn Cape Cod All-Star honors, including Vanderbilt outfielder Rhett Wiseman, Alabama pitcher Justin Kamplain and Arkansas southpaw Jalen Beeks.
In the last CCBL All-Star game that saw Wildcats, Gott and Rogers turned in a standout performance in the 2011 All-Star Game, played at historic Fenway Park. Rogers earned the starting assignment on the mound and picked up the win, and Gott earned the save with a scoreless ninth, with UK head coach Gary Henderson watching the game in Boston.
UK freshmen Zach Strecker and Storm Wilson also each earned all-star honors in their collegiate summer leagues, playing in the Prospect League game on Wednesday. Strecker has a 3-2 record and a 1.70 ERA in six games and 37 innings, while Wilson has hit .314 in 42 games with 11 steals and eight doubles.
Outfielder Kyle Barrett – UK’s leading hitter and a 2013 All-SEC Freshman Team selection – has been named an All-Star in the Perfect Game Collegiate League. Barrett leads his Amsterdam team in average with a .380 mark, driving in seven runs and stealing 14 bases.
