Mayfield Area Trooper Receives Highway Safety Award

ksp award 500

MAYFIELD, Ky. (3/26/13) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) honored nine members of the agency who went above and beyond the call of duty to make highways safer in the Commonwealth. The sixth annual “Excellence in Highway Safety” award ceremony was held at KSP Headquarters on March 26, 2013. The awards are based upon the highest number of occupant protection, speed, driving under the influence (DUI), commercial motor vehicle (CMV) citations written and educational programs presented during 2012.

KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer presented the awards to four troopers, three officers and two civilian inspectors.

“I am proud of the troopers and officers who are being honored today and it extends beyond these nine individuals,” says Brewer. “It’s really every unit we have that’s out there on our highways, or in our local communities, advocating for highway safety on a daily basis.”

Cadiz-resident Tpr. Nathan Clinkenbeard is a three-year veteran from the Mayfield Post and received the Excellence in Highway Safety award for Occupant Protection. Clinkenbeard wrote 738 seat belt citations in 2012.

Brewer thanked all the award recipients for their desire to save lives and make the Commonwealth safer for Kentuckians.

“We have a group of officers who go beyond what is normally expected of them and we want to show them how much we appreciate what they do. Their efforts have a direct impact on reducing deaths in Kentucky. They make a real contribution to keeping roadways safer throughout the state," he said.

All 2012 award recipients included: Tpr. Jason Young (Speed); Sgt. Steve Walker (DUI Enforcement); Ofr. Dennis Jackson (CMV Safety Inspections); Insp. William Williams (Safety Inspections); Ofr. Christopher Duke (CMV Out of Service Rate); Insp. Wesley Garmon (CMV Out of Service Rate); Ofr. Travis Rogers (CMV Enforcement); and Tpr. Endre Samu (Community Education).

“The men and women who serve this agency every day by patrolling our roadways made an incredible impact in 2012. Statewide, KSP troopers and CVE officers wrote 89,784 speed citations, 44,979 seat belt/restraint citations, 28,242 CMV citations, made 8,694 DUI arrests and provided local communities with 504 educational programs pertaining to public safety. All of these officers are to be commended,” added Brewer.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
