Suspicious Vehicle Complaint Leads to Vehicle Pursuit

high speed chase 300 bluePADUCAH, Ky. (3/19/13) – On March 18, 2013 at approximately 6:30 PM, Deputies with the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department initiated a vehicle pursuit.
 
While on routine patrol, a citizen approached Sgt. Michael Wray with a complaint of suspicious vehicle in the 5500 block of Said Road. The citizen stated that he observed a white Mitsubishi passenger car go down a gravel road that leads back to some farm land off of Said Road. The citizen stated that it was suspicious due to the farm land not in current use.
 
Within minutes, the white Mitsubishi vehicle was observed coming back towards Said Road off of the farm road. The vehicle was identified as a White 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The driver was identified as Rodney T. Burnett, 40, of Paducah. The passenger was identified as Terry Byerly, 40, of Paducah. Sgt. Wray then activated his emergency lighting equipment and sirens in an attempt to get the vehicle to stop. Burnett proceeded outbound on Said Road at a high rate of speed. Burnett then proceeded into Graves County.
 
The Graves County Sheriff’s Department and the Kentucky State Police were notified and then proceeded to assist in the pursuit.
 
Once in Graves County, Burnett took a right turn onto KY State Route 348. Burnett proceeded on Ky State Route 348 until making a right onto Hardmoney Road. Hardmoney Road was followed until reaching the intersection of Wadesboro and Hardmoney. Burnett took a left onto Wadesboro Road. Burnett then proceeded on Wadesboro until reaching Husbands Road where he veered onto Hardmoney Road. Burnett nearly struck a McCracken County Deputy and went through a residential yard causing damage. It was determined that several baggies containing methamphetamine were discarded from the vehicle in this area. Deputy Cory Golightly recovered a quantity of methamphetamine from the roadway after the pursuit had ended where it was thrown from the vehicle in an attempt to discard the evidence.
 
Burnett then went inbound on Hardmoney Road until reaching McNeil Road. Burnett then went back left onto McNeil Road and proceeded to Old Mayfield Road. Burnett then proceeded on Old Mayfield Road where he reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. Burnett proceeded back into Graves County where he took a right hand turn onto Wice Church Road nearly striking a Graves County Sheriff’s Deputy. Burnett then proceeded at a high rate of speed on Wice Church Road where he reached the intersection of Old Clay Pit Road where he made a right hand turn. Burnett proceeded on Old Clay Pit Road until going over a rail road track crossing and losing control. Burnett then over corrected, spun out of control striking a tree, and coming to final rest in the road way. Burnett and the passenger were both taken into custody without further incident.
 
A search of the vehicle was conducted. The search revealed a quantity of crystal methamphetamine and US currency.
 
Both Burnett and Byerly were treated for apparent minor injuries at a local hospital where they remained in custody.
 
Both Burnett and Byerly both had extensive criminal histories.
 
Burnett’s prior charges include: Trafficking in a controlled Substance 1st Degree 2nd or Greater offense, Fleeing or Evading 1st Degree (motor vehicle), Persistent Felony Offender, Tampering with Physical Evidence. Burnett is currently on probation for a March/ 2012 conviction for Fleeing or Evading Police 1st Degree.
 
Byerly also has an extensive criminal history including Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st Degree and 1st Degree Robbery.
 
Both were transported to the McCracken County Jail once treated.
