Relay for Life Team Raises Record $237,000 at Dancing with Our Stars

dance1PADUCAH, Ky. (3/27/13) – Lourdes’ Relay For Life team broke another fundraising record Saturday night at the 7th annual Lourdes Dancing with Our Stars event at Harrah’s in Metropolis, IL. Leading the state of Kentucky in 2012, Lourdes Relay For Life team was awarded the #1 Team in Kentucky, the #2 in the Mid-South Division and the #4 Team in the World. Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity.

Through sponsorships, silent auction, ticket sales, and the lively “voting” for dancers, the Lourdes team raised a record-setting $237,000 for the American Cancer Society. The event pairs local celebrities with professional dance instructors.

New for this year included cell phone technology that allowed new ways to bid on silent auction items. The night also is a chance to honor cancer survivors. Ashley Storie, a 29 year-old brain cancer survivor, was recognized for her courageous fight against the disease. She was diagnosed at 25 and is now cancer free.

This year’s celebrities were Kim Homra, John Denton, Dr. John Ballert, Dr. HW Ford, David Boggs, Dr. Carl Baker, Dan Stovesand, Donald Shively, Brandon Barnhill, Dr. Matthew Mangino, Dia Canter, Carolyn Morgan, Marissa Hollowed, Lori Brown, Amanda Casebier, Joy Lentz, Scottye Williams, Roxie Jarvis and Nicole Edwards. The professional dance instructors included Danielle Johnson, Terrie White, Missy Compton, Lynda Clark, Tracy Childers, Angie Woods, Mary Jordan, Jack Johnson, Todd Jordan, Freddie Hicks, Jay Brasher , Cash White and Ashley Thurman.

dance2This year’s judges included Johnette Worak, WPSD/Local 6 Anchor, Dr. Lisa Lasher, Lourdes Director of Women’s Services, and Dr. Carl LeBuhn.

Top honors went to Kim Homra and Danielle Johnson, second place honors went to Dr. Carl Baker and Angie Woods, and Joy Lentz and Ashley Thurman took third. Audience favorites went to Carl Baker, Dr. HW Ford with instructor Lynda Clark and Kim Homra.

Winners are awarded based upon the amount of money raised for the American Cancer Society.

Rita Bailey, registered dietitian at Lourdes and volunteer coordinator for the event, said the success was the result of contributions by many generous individuals and businesses. “This overwhelming support from our community has well exceeded my expectations,” says Bailey. “We have such wonderful support from our sponsors, volunteers – including all the dancers and instructors who give of their time. It takes hundreds of hard-working, dedicated volunteers to achieve this level of success, and we are so thankful for each and every one.”

Last year’s event raised $220,000.
