Firefighter Fighting for Life against Cancer

fireteen 300GREENVILLE, Ky. (7/26/13) – On Tuesday, July 16th, 19-year-old Caleb Harvell was taken to Muhlenberg County Hospital for a severe pain.

Caleb received an ultrasound and was diagnosed with cancer on Thursday, July 18th. CT scans showed several dead mass in his lungs and abdomen. A biopsy proved the dead mass were remains of the original cancer. MRI showed several tumors in his brain, also related to the cancer. Caleb began receiving blood transfusions due to a dangerously low blood count. Doctors gave Caleb a 15% chance of survival.

Sunday Caleb was taken into surgery to remove most of the mass, and then chemo treatment began on the tumors in his brain. Radiation therapy is set to begin next week. Doctors drained 14 ml of fluid from his left lung, allowing some breathing relief. This morning Doctors have raised his chance of survival between 30 and 50%.

Caleb is a dedicated firefighter with the Greenville Volunteer Fire Department, and continues to plea with doctors to release him to continue his passion of service. The volunteers of Greenville and surrounding departments have united together to raise cancer awareness, prayers and donations for the Harvell family.

Several other organizations and businesses have expressed interest in assisting in the fight for his life. Word has spread as far as Puerto Rico. Caleb and his parents, Phil and Lisa, continue to keep high hopes, despite Caleb's constant changing conditions.

Caleb is currently being treated at the Baptist Hospital in Madisonville.

A trust fund for donations has been set up at First Kentucky Bank in Greenville, Ky.

Also, in an effort to raise awareness and funds there will be a poker run on August 16th with all proceeds going to Caleb Harvell.

The Greenville Fire Department will begin selling t-shirts tonight at Friday Bike Night in support of Mr. Harvell.
