MNHHS Olympic Field Day

fielddayMADISONVILLE, Ky. (5/3/13) – Madisonville North Hopkins High School (MNHHS) presented their annual Olympic Field Day event yesterday, May 2, 2013, at the Badgett Athletic Complex at the MNHHS campus. The event was sponsored by MNHHS student body members (Key Club). Over 1500 area school students that attended the event were from Browning Springs, Hanson, James Madison, Pride Avenue, Jesse Stuart, West Broadway and MNHHS.

The opening ceremony began at approximately 9:15 a.m. yesterday with the Parade of Athletes. This included all of the schools participating in the event, as well as the MNHHS Marching Maroon Band, directed by Rob Bryant. The Parade was followed by the Presentation of Colors, presented by the MNHHS Color Guard and NJROTC, with the U.S. flag carried by MNHHS Senior Devin Rogers and the Kentucky Flag carried by MNHHS Senior Jessica Daniels. Noah Taylor sang the National Anthem.

The opening ceremony continued with Senior Recognition, Service Award Presentation (In honor of Bernie Brashear), Outstanding Peer Tutor Award presentation, Outstanding Service Award presentation, and the lighting of the Olympic flame.

Following the opening, the students went into the sports sessions. There were 16 different sports key locations set up all over the campus with student and teacher volunteers assisting and coaching all of the students in their activity of interest. Many students had a middle school or high school “Buddy” assigned to them so that they all had a more personal experience in the games. The students participated in archery, baseball, basketball, cheerleading and face painting, color guard, dance, football, golf, interactive games, karate, obstacle course, petting zoo, soccer and kickball, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. There was also a carnival open for most of the day where many children spent most of their time playing games to win toy prizes.

The participation from the student body and the staff at MNHHS for the Olympic Field Day event is undeniable. The students who assist in the games each raise or pay $35 as their monetary contribution to the event, which purchases the food and supplies, such as ribbons and equipment and any game accessories that may be of expense. Coordinator Tina Peyton, who is a MNHHS business teacher, expressed her gratitude to the community and the students for their role in contributing to the event.

All of the coordinators publicly acknowledged those business, civic organizations and individuals whom sponsored and donated their time and resources to this year’s Field Day:
