Letter to the Editor – Local Citizen Concerned over Bean Cemetery Road Wrecks

letter editor4 300HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (6/15/13) – The following is a Letter to the Editor from local citizen J.M. Thornberry SR. regarding accidents occurring at the intersection of Bean Cemetery Road and Laffoon Trail.
 
I am concerned about the frequent accidents which occur at the intersection of Bean Cemetery Road and Laffoon Trail. From my residence on West Center Street and I have noticed a significant increase in traffic over the last few years and now with the advent of the new jail, the county maintenance barn and the animal shelter combined with traffic associated with the mines and folks who use Bean Cemetery as a conduit to Madisonville from the West side of the county that traffic is bound to become even heavier. In addition to the issues mentioned above heavy trucks associated with the mine, the sewage plant and the area used for green waste also frequent the area.
 
The intersection in question has several issues which are conducive to accidents, foremost among them the fact that it is not visible coming from the south on Bean Road until one is effectively on top of it and also difficult to detect when approached from the North as well. This intersection has within recent months experienced several serious wrecks resulting in fatalities and injuries in addition to extensive vehicle damage. Failing a reconstruction of the two roads it seems that attention should be paid to improving signage, changing the intersection to a four-way stop and possibly installing a caution light. It certainly seems that the small delays suffered by those traveling this dangerous and congested section of road when coming to a stop are minor when compared to the consequences of allowing a continuation of the status quo.
