God’s Great Outdoor Adventures – Outdoor Safety Tips

jerseydevil 300KENTUCKY (7/3/13) – Hello Again! I hope you are having a blessed week. I have been enjoying my vacation, even though it has rained a lot. We have had a great time.

We always try to focus on safety while we are working, but we also focus on safety while we are out having fun. Everyone should have a first-aid kit that they carry while in the outdoors. You may need it, or you might come upon someone else that might need it. Also, be sure to use plenty of insect repellent before heading out. This will protect you from ticks, chiggers, mosquitos and other biting insects.

I always start running my trail cams during vacation. Last Thursday, I headed out to set a couple and only got one set. I was in a hurry because my wife was having her nursing graduation ceremony and I had to get back home for it. I was in a new area where I had never hunted. I had the area spotted from the truck where I wanted to put the camera. It was about a half mile from the truck. I had sprayed down and had all my gear so I began the journey. I walked a deer trail the whole way up. I found a place to set up the cam, but I was eager to look the place over. There was a very nice waterfall that I crossed where the deer had been crossing to get to the other hill. I noticed a clearing at the top and I thought it was the road coming around. I thought I would check it out and save myself some walking in the future. The hillside was very steep and very rocky. There were several big rocks and the area looked like it would have been full of snakes. I stayed on top of the rocks to keep from getting snake bitten. When I made my way to the top it was another watering hole so I turned to come back down. I had about an hour to set the camera up and get back to the house. I came back off the hill and the rocks had moss on top of them and apparently one had a little dew left on it. When I jumped to that rock my feet went out from underneath me. I hit 3 or 4 of the big rocks on my way to the ground. I was in a lot of pain. I thought I had broken my leg.

When I got up I was burning up and I felt like I was going to pass out. It just kept going thru my head that nobody knew where I was at and I had to make it to the graduation. I tried to walk, but I was in too bad of shape. If I would of have pushed myself, I wouldn't had made it.

I sat down and thought of my fire dept. training. First I had to gather my thoughts and calm down. Then once I got to feeling better, after about fifteen to twenty minutes of sitting there, I managed to make it back to my truck. I am very sore and my leg is bruised all the way around from my knee to my ankle.

Always go with someone or let someone know where you are going and roughly what time you will be back. I have maps of my hunting properties and I mark my stand locations on the map. I am going to give a copy to my wife to put up just in case I might not return one day and she will have an idea where to send the search and rescue team.

Well that is all for today! Until next week God Bless and be safe!
