UK mens golf 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (3/3/14) — The Los Cabos Querencia proved to play tough for the University of Kentucky men’s golf team and all other teams during the first round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate, as zero of the 14 teams recorded an under par round on Sunday.

The Wildcats sit in eighth place after a 14-over par, 298. Second round action begins Monday at 10 a.m. ET.

SMU and Houston sit atop the standings at four-over par, 288, while Alabama (+10), Vanderbilt (+12), Baylor (+12) and UT Arlington (+12) complete the top five. Houston’s Roman Robledo leads all players at three-under par, 68.

Rounding out the rest of the team standings were LSU (+13), Arkansas (+15), Coastal Carolina (+19), Ole Miss (+21), Lamar (+23), Chattanooga (+23) and Abilene Christian (+37).

“Querencia was super difficult today,” said UK head coach Brian Craig. “We fought and fought just to be respectable. The wind is not predicted to be as strong tomorrow which will produce better scoring conditions, but this course is never easy. We need a really good second round to have a chance in a field this strong.”

Senior Stephen Powers recorded the best round for UK on Sunday with a one-over par, 72. The Naperville, Ill., native is in good position as he is tied for ninth and looking for his second straight top 10 finish. Powers finished the day with three birdies and an eagle on hole No. 9.

Sitting two spots behind Powers is fellow senior Ben Stow at three-over par, 74 and tied for 21st. Senior Cody Martin and junior David Snyder each registered five-over pars of 76. The two Wildcats are tied for 33rd after the first day.

Junior David Snyder rounds out the UK lineup and will head into the second round tied for 59th after an eight-over par, 79.

Following the Querencia Cabo Collegiate, UK will travel to Statesboro, Ga., for the Schenkel Invitational held March 14-16.
