BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (10/28/13) – The 2012 Talisman was awarded a Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press on Saturday at the National College Media Convention in New Orleans. It was the 15th Pacemaker for Western Kentucky University’s yearbook, an honor reserved for the nation’s top student publications.
The 2012 Talisman was edited by Ashley Wittenborn, a Libertyville, Ill., native who graduated in May 2012 with a degree in graphic design. Other editorial board members were managing editor Telia Butler, a Bowling Green graduate; writing editors Sarah McCullum, a Memphis graduate, and Dallas Stoller, a Louisville graduate; copy editor Amber Plunkett, a Clarksville, Tenn., graduate; design editors Conor Lewis, a St. Louis graduate, and Matt Clifton, a Louisville graduate; and photo editors Tim Harris, a Louisville graduate, and Armando Sanchez, an Austin, Texas, graduate. Katie Clark was the adviser.
Also at the conference, the College Heights Herald student newspaper and the Talisman were among the Best of Show honorees for their current editions.
The Herald, under Fall 2013 editor-in-chief Michael McKay, a Louisville senior, placed fifth in the Best of Show competition among all college news organizations represented. The Herald’s digital edition, WKUHERALD, was also one of 10 Online Pacemaker finalists. The 2013 Talisman, edited by Amber Plunkett, placed seventh among all yearbooks in the Best of Show competition.
The Talisman and the College Heights Herald have legacies of being ranked among the best in the nation. Each of the student-run publications now has 15 Pacemaker awards to its name, for a total of 30 Pacemakers held by WKU Student Publications.
The Pacemaker is considered the most prestigious award for a student publication.
The Talisman is a fall-delivery yearbook first published in 1924. It chronicles the academic year in a narrative format with an emphasis on exceptional photojournalism, strong writing and design. The 2013 edition, which had a press run of 5,000 copies, is currently in distribution.
The College Heights Herald is published in print every Tuesday and Thursday during the academic calendar, and is available any time in its digital formats at WKUHERALD.com online and through the WKUHERALD apps for Apple and Android mobile devices. The Herald was founded in January 1925.
