WKU Wins Hearst Photojournalism Title

wku journalism3 300BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (3/28/14) — WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting has won the Hearst Journalism Awards Program’s Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition for the 21st time in the past 25 years.

WKU also is in first place in the Hearst program’s Intercollegiate Multimedia Competition after three of four contests. WKU has won the multimedia title for the past two years.

Three WKU photojournalism students placed in the top five in the latest photojournalism and multimedia contests.

  • In the Picture Story/Series Photojournalism Competition, Danny Guy, a senior from Minneapolis, Minn., finished second and received a $2,000 award.
  • Brittany Greeson, a junior from Owensboro, finished fourth and received a $1,000 award.
  • In the Multimedia Enterprise Competition, Justin Philalack, a senior from Chapmansboro, Tenn., finished third and received a $1,500 award.

The School of Journalism & Broadcasting will receive matching awards and will receive a $10,000 award for winning the photojournalism competition.

Often called the “Pulitzers of College Journalism,” the William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s Journalism Awards Program, now in its 54th year, is conducted under the auspices of accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. The program, in which 105 undergraduate journalism programs across the nation are eligible to participate, consists of five writing, two photojournalism, one radio, two television and four multimedia competitions offering up to $500,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends.

WKU has finished among the top eight nationally in the Hearst overall competition for 20 consecutive years and won the national title in 2005, 2001 and 2000.

The final 2013-14 intercollegiate winners will be announced in April.

This year’s top 10 finishers in the Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition are: WKU; Ohio University; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Kent State University; University of Missouri; Syracuse University; Pennsylvania State University; Indiana University; Arizona State University; and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

WKU leads the Intercollegiate Multimedia Competition after three of four contests followed by University of Nebraska-Lincoln; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; University of Missouri; University of Montana; Syracuse University; Pennsylvania State University; Arizona State University; San Francisco State University; and University of Southern California.
