Whitfield Votes to Keep Government Operating and Delay Obamacare

whitfield ed official 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (9/30/13) – U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield (KY-01), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Power, released the following statement regarding his vote to keep the government operating through December 15th.  This vote also delays for one year the individual mandate to purchase insurance, eliminates federal health care subsidies for all Members of Congress and Congressional staff, and makes the President and his political staff subject to the same Obamacare requirements as everyone else.  

“They say that politics is the art of compromise, which is a lesson that apparently has been lost on President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.  I am extremely disappointed that the President and the Senate Majority Leader were unwilling to work with the House of Representatives to reach an agreement to keep the government funded and prevent a shutdown.  

“The simple fact remains that Obamacare is not ready for implementation, and that is why the President has been using an unfair, piecemeal approach to delay certain components of the law while keeping others.  It will also increase health care premiums on Kentuckians anywhere from 65 to 106 percent, and that is not something that they can afford in this economy under President Obama’s leadership.  

“President Obama and Senate Majority Harry Reid have refused to compromise because they argue that Obamacare is so great.  What President Obama won’t tell you is that he and all of his political employees are currently exempt from Obamacare.  If Obamacare is so great, then the President should have no problem agreeing to a continuing resolution that fully funds the federal government and also makes him and his political staff have to buy into the health care law that they are trying to sell.  

“Once again, it is time for the Senate to act to prevent a government shutdown.”
