Sign Placement Causes Stir in Bremen

BREMEN, Ky. (1/17/14) More than a hundred Bremen residents packed the city's community center Thursday night to discuss the recent placement of three no-parking signs in front of several businesses along Kentucky 81.

The no-parking signs, erected by the Kentucky Department of Transportation, are mounted directly in the middle of what were parking spaces. The placement of the signs now make it impossible to park in front of two historic buildings, including a barber shop that has been a landmark in Bremen for more than 60 years. It is also now impossible for handicapped customers to access the stores.

Several participants at the Thursday meeting said the simple solution is to make Church Street a one way street. This suggestion brought rousing applause from many in the gathering.

Church Street flows directly onto Kentucky 81. Visibility of Kentucky 81 is blocked by the two buildings in question.

According to Keith Todd, of the Kentucky Department of Transportation, the state was requested by the Bremen City Council to erect the signs.

"The city requested the signs, so we put them there. That's the way it works." Todd told SurfKY News. "If a city says they have a safety issue we try to be supportive."

Several accidents have occurred in the area in question.

However, Bremen Mayor Roy Shaver told SurfKY News that the city did not approve the the signs.

"We had four wrecks about two years ago, and we had the state look into it. The state put up the signs. We had nothing to do with it," Shaver said.

Shaver added that a state transportation adviser is scheduled to make a trip to Bremen and review the situation in person in the next few days.

Desterie Embry, co-owner of Key Largo Video Store told SurfKY News that the decision was made by the city council 18 months ago.

"This was done to address safety concerns," said Embry. "We all want the safest solution. Making Church Street a one-way street would be the safer solution without affecting local businesses."

Whatever the final outcome, the placement of three no-parking signs has created quite a stir in a quiet community of approximately 200 people. So far, more than 300 people from Bremen and the surrounding area have signed a petition to have the signs removed.
