Senator Rhoads’ Honors Corky Withrow on Induction into KY Basketball Hall of Fame

Sen Rhoads guest CorkyFRANKFORT, Ky. (3/28/14) – The Kentucky State Senate today honored former Central City basketball star Raymond “Corky” Withrow upon his induction into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

Senate Resolution 314, sponsored by Senator Jerry P. Rhoads, D-Madisonville and recognizing Withrow’s achievements, received unanimous approval.

“It is a privilege to pay tribute to Corky Withrow,” said Senator Rhoads. “He is a living legend in Central City, where his illustrious career began — but not where it ended. After high school, Corky left his mark in college and then moved on to minor league baseball. He set the bar high, while bringing honor to his community and state.”

The stellar career of Withrow at Central City High School earned him an induction into the Hall of Fame, along with a 16-member class that includes such Kentucky greats as Jack Givens, Vernon Hatton and Todd May. This is the third Hall of Fame class and brings the total inductees to 49 members.

Withrow, 76, was a two-sport athlete at Central City. On the basketball court, he was a 1956 first-team All-American. He led Central City to three consecutive Sweet Sixteens, scored 3,130 career points, and was twice named to the Sweet Sixteen all-tournament team. He is a member of the Central City Hall of Fame, the State Tournament Hall of Fame, and the KHSAA Hall of Fame for his extraordinary accomplishments during his high school career. He also played baseball.

After high school, he attended Georgetown College and Kentucky Wesleyan College. As a member of the 1957 Georgetown team, he starred in an upset of the University of Louisville, scoring 26 points during the matchup.

Sen Rhoads Corky WithrowFollowing his collegiate career, he focused on baseball. He played in six games as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, before achieving success in the minor league. He had a .260 in his career batting average and appeared in 1,128 games in the minors from 1956-1966.

Withrow’s two-sport career allowed him the distinction of having played with both Wilt Chamberlain and Stan Musial in the same year.

“We offer our congratulations to Corky Withrow for being inducted into the Hall of Fame,” Senator Rhoads said. “We commend him for his achievements at Central City and acknowledge the mark he left upon the sport of basketball.”

When the Senate adjourned on Friday, it did so in honor of Raymond “Corky” Withrow.
