School Board Member Resigns; Middle School Football Programs to Merge

muhl boePOWDERLY, Ky. (5/14/14) — The Muhlenberg County Board of Education covered a wide agenda on Monday, May 12, ending with the announcement that board member Richard Adcock had tendered his resignation.

According to a spokesperson for the board, Adcock had been a member of the board since January 2013.

Adcock did not attend the May 12 meeting. Board Chairman Don Richey told the meeting that he had met with Adcock on Friday, May 9, and that Adcock expressed his desire to resign from the board. A motion to accept the resignation of Adcock passed with a motion by Darrell Bowers and a second by Margaret Williams. The vote to accept Adcock's resignation was unanimous.

During the public participation portion of the meeting Jeffery Dukes spoke regarding removing the book "The Glass Castle" from the curriculum at MCHS. Dukes expressed a continued concern by some that the book contains sexually-explicit language and content not suitable for students.

Robert Schmidt, president of the Greenville Country Club, and country club board member Richard Whitler also took part in the public participation portion of the meeting, requesting that the school system's golf teams split their practices between both the Central City and the Greenville country clubs .

After the meeting, Schmidt told SurfKY News that he and Whitler attended the meeting to express their concern with the high school golf program.

"When the North and South high schools were in place, South used the Greenville Country Club and North used the Central City Country Club," Schmidt said. "Both clubs were paid the same for the use. Since the merger five years ago, the girls and boys varsity and junior varsity have been using the Central City County Club exclusively, and therefore collecting all the fees from the board. GCC feels that they have not been treated fairly. We feel like this is in the best interest of the golfers to experience both courses, so we are asking the board to split the use and fees 50/50 for the upcoming season and beyond."

A motion to merge the Muhlenberg South Middle School and Muhlenberg North Middle School football programs passed with a motion by Bowers and a second by Williams. Bowers, Richey, and Williams voted for the measure while Dr. Kelly Tarter abstained.

During the meeting, the board recognized the following South Middle students for being selected by the Duke University Talent Identification Program; Raelyn Hagy (English), Timberly Jenkins (English and Reading), Cameron Stanley (Science).

Jordan Hancock, a 10th grade student at Muhlenberg County High School, was recognized for earning second place in the Kentucky Governor’s Mansion Centennial Celebration Essay Contest for 10 – 12th grades.

Macey Mayes was recognized for receiving the McConnell Scholarship from the University of Louisville. Quinten Travis was recognized for receiving the Otis A. Singletary Scholarship from the University of Kentucky.

A motion to approve the fiscal year 2014-2015 tentative working budget of $51.9 million passed with a motion by Bowers and a second by Tarter.  Votes Aye, Unanimous

A motion to approve final payment to McKinney Construction for $67,202.91 on the MCHS sports complex passed with a motion by Bowers, a second by Williams and a unanimous vote.
