microphoneGREENVILLE, Ky. (5/28/14) — Back in March, the Muhlenberg Arts Advisory Council and Muhlenberg Community Theatre announced that the last Friday of each month would be Open Mic Friday at the Palace Theatre in Greenville.

Before the first opening night, Melanie Smith, one of the organizers, told SurfKY News that the purpose of the event was to "find the talent that exists in Muhlenberg County."

Smith said the response from audiences and the talent on stage have been awesome.

"MAAC along with MCTI look forward to this Friday's show from 7 to 10 p.m.," Smith said. "As I said before, the original idea was to provide a venue where the people of Muhlenberg County and surrounding counties can share their talent.”

Open Mic Night has brought attention to a lot of great talent from younger performers including Anna Probus, Hannah Brown, Shelby Hudson and Jacob Jones, along with up and coming bands like Finding Skylight.

“We have had Stacie and Tommy Barton play guitar and sing,” said Smith. “Joe Hudson, executive director of the National Thumbpickers Association, performed a few numbers alongside his daughter

Shelby. Dan Duncan performed on the trumpet, guitar and piano. We have had other great talents like Jamie Buchanan, Bob Dasher and Richard Neathamer. We have also been laughing over the comedy of Bobby Gardner."

Donations will be taken at the door and profits will be split between MAAC and MCTI and go towards supporting upcoming events of both groups, according to Smith.

"We are doing our best to keep Open Mic Night always on the last Friday of the month so that we can keep encouraging new talent and new audience members alike," she said. "I encourage everyone that hasn't attended yet to come out and perform or watch others perform. If you have already been to Open Mic Night, spread the word about the fun we have had."
