kareokeCENTRAL CITY, Ky. (6/23/14) — There’s a reason people gather at Jan’s Burger Basket — to share fun, food and song.

Thursday was the fourth karaoke night at the restaurant at 544 Phillip Stone Way, Central City, with 140 to 160 people joining the event.

Owners Kevin and Jan Nelson said the event was started to offer locals a place to enjoy sharing their songs. The singing begins at 6:30 p.m.

"I want to give people a place to go,” said Nelson. “Karaoke is a good family event and it costs the attendees nothing. People like to sing and its good, clean fun."

Nelson spread the word of his Thursday Karaoke sessions through word of mouth and the internet. As Nelson discussed the event he took a head count, and 81 people were already in attendance with more were driving in.

The evening air was cooling down and the audience was greatly enjoying the singing taking place on the karaoke stage. One of the performers was C. Michael Ray.

"My mother was a singer and I sang with her for years,” said Ray. “My cousins are Phil and Don Everly so I guess singing is just in my blood."

Lloyd Holman mounted the stage with Becky Payton to sing a duet. Holman said that he began singing with his wife about three years before she passed away and now this is what he does for fun.

"Holman was in the hospital for 48 days,” said Martha Sue Coleman. “The day after he got out of the hospital he attended church and sang ‘Peace in the Valley’, the church gave him a standing ovation."

Holman suffers from cancer and has had a number of operations but he still enjoys singing.

“If you are looking for something to do on a Thursday evening come on over have some good food and a good time,” said Nelson.
