hcs 300HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (8/18/14) — Juniors in Hopkins County Schools improved their ACT scores over the previous year and topped the state average in every content area last spring.

“We are very pleased with these results,” said Superintendent Linda Zellich. “These scores show continual progress at both Hopkins County Central and Madisonville North Hopkins high school. They also reflect just how hard our students and teachers are working to increase our academic performance.”

In addition, the district topped the state average in percent of students meeting college readiness benchmarks in all four content areas, as well as those who met all four benchmarks. The percentage of district students meeting college readiness benchmarks increased in three of the four content areas.

“It’s just a fact that students, teachers and administrators have gotten more focused and targeted in our efforts,” Zellich said. “While we’re excited about these results, we have to keep working harder if we are going to continue to make progress.”

Last year’s juniors took the ACT on March 18 as part of the state accountability system.

The average district composite score was 19.9, which is above the state average of 19.4. Hopkins County Central’s average composite score was 19.7, and Madisonville North Hopkins’ average score was 20.2.

Both schools topped the state average in percent of students meeting college readiness benchmarks in English, math and science. The reading section posed challenges, with the percent of students meeting that benchmark decreasing for the state, district and at both high schools.

The MNHHS percentage, however, remained above the state average. The school also topped the state average in percent of those who met all four benchmarks.
