running1 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (10/23/13) - Throw away the popcorn, turn off the Real Housewives of Miami, and join the Owensboro Parks and Recreation for their “Couch to 5K in 5 Weeks” training program.

Participants don’t have to be runners, because the program helps people at any endurance-level gain insight on pacing, flexibility, speed development, strategy, and most importantly motivation, said Logan Neal, Recreational Supervisor for the Owensboro Parks and Recreation.

“It’s a good way to get up and get going, and to make a life change,” Neal said.

The sessions are twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 5 weeks and will progressively prepare runners for the Holiday Hustle race in December. Instructor Dan Chelstrom will test-run every individual on the start date to build a personal plan unique to any other running program, according to Neal.

Chelstrom, is an experienced sports director and distance coach of the track and field team at Dickinson State University. He has coached three teams to the Track & Field National Team Championships, three National Championship Relay Teams, and coached 29 All-Americans, according to KYTrackXC.

The class starts Oct. 29 and runs through Nov. 26. Class times are 6 to 7 p.m. in Moreland Park. Registration is $32 per participant. For more information, call (270) 687-8700.
