God’s Great Outdoor Adventures - Big Bucks are Sporting Some Horns

deer greenKENTUCKY (6/19/13) – Hello again! I hope you are having a blessed day! While some folks are busy on the lakes catching fish, others are currently in the woods preparing for early bow season coming up in September.

Die-hard bow hunters are already scouting with their trail cameras. I will start putting my trail cams out on the end of this week, or first part of next week.

The bucks have already been growing some very impressive racks. My good friend, Wayne Whitaker, owner of Edge River Outfitters, has already had some very nice bucks on his trail cams. I have also spotted some nice ones out feeding in the fields.

A lot of people have it all wrong, in that they put mineral blocks out as an attractant during the Fall season. Actually, you need to have your blocks out all year around. The deer need the minerals in early spring as their antlers begin to grown and throughout the rest of the year for added mineral and nutrients to help have a healthier herd. Always wear scent cover when placing your mineral licks and trail cams, to keep you from being detected.

The next step is to get in and out of the area as quickly as possible so you won’t spook any bucks. If you happen to see a deer bedded down, act like you don’t see him/her and continue walking. Most of the time, the deer will stay in that spot and not run off. Also, exit a different direction and avoid the bedding area.

I can usually determine which bucks will be my targets by early August. This allows me plenty of time for stand placement.

If you follow these techniques, you will be a much better bow hunter.

Until next week, God Bless and be safe!
