Outdoors with Big Country – Dawg Days of Summer

KENTUCKY (7/11/13) – It’s July, and it’s the Dawg Days of Summer!

It’s been fairly mild in the temperature gauge, compared to last summer where we had record high temperatures near the 110 degree mark. On the days when it’s not too hot, there are still places that you can catch fish.

Starting out, I would suggest that you find a place with some current, such as a river or a creek. Keep in mind that a little current is a good fishing opportunity, but a lot of current is not.

The tailwaters below dams are good if the water isn’t high or if it doesn’t have a muddy shade to it. If you do fish below dams, try to locate an eddy or swirl in the waters and cast your bait near it if possible. Regardless of how good a spot looks, though, don’t risk your health and safety to get to it. Safety first in the great outdoors of Western Kentucky!

Right now, the white bass are in the jumps in the big lakes on most days. This type of fishing is fast action and some fish will hit just about any bait that resembles a minnow.

Another good spot is below Rochester and Calhoun Dam on the Green River. These spots are good if you can catch the water at a stable level or slowly rising. Recent heavy rains may hamper that option, though.

If you’re just not much on hot days out fishing in a boat or on the bank, this is also a good time of year to get that archery equipment set up and ready for the upcoming bow season that starts on September 7.

Try to stay cool and safe on your adventures and good luck!

Until next week, I’ll see ya in the woods or on the water!

FISH OF THE WEEK

Big Country is currently featuring local anglers throughout the region in his Fish of the Week section. This week’s Fish of the Week title goes out to Timbo Storms of Bremen, KY. While fishing in Kentucky Lake recently, it was a real contest to locate fish, as a result of the recent heavy rains. The Kentucky Dam had 11 flood gates open and releasing water out of the lake to lower the lake levels, which makes it difficult to find good water to fish. But, obviously, Timbo has the natural capability to always catch fish. Timbo caught this nice smallmouth bass.

Timbo Storms is the owner and taxidermist of Cypress Creek Taxidermy in Bremen. For your next deer mount, look up Timbo Storms for some quality work, or just drop by and talk a little fishing with Timbo.
