badget bridge 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (11/7/13) – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans to close KY 1069/Stagecoach Road in Hopkins County on Friday, Saturday, and Monday, Nov. 8, 9 & 11, 2013, as part of ongoing work on the new Brown Badgett Loop Connector Bridge Project.

This closure on KY 1069/Stagecoach Road from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., CST, is to allow improvements to a dip near the intersection with the new connector and allow a nearby cross drain on KY 1069 to be replaced.

According to KYTC District 2 Chief Engineer Kevin McClearn, the work can be completed with a daytime closure over about 3 working days.

“We originally thought work on the dip in KY 1069 just south of the new intersection could be completed without closing KY 1069. However, by allowing the contractor to close the road to traffic the work can be completed quicker and with a greater level of safety for both workers and the driving public,” McClearn said. “Instead of maybe a week or two of traffic disruptions, the contractor should be able to complete the work in a few days by closing KY 1069 to all traffic.”

Work to raise the dip in the roadway is to provide better sight-distance at the new intersection.

“During the design of the project, engineers carefully examined the dip in KY 1069 near the intersection. An analysis determined that an acceptable line of sight existed. However, as the new intersection started to take shape, we determined that additional improvements were warranted,” McClearn Said. “By taking some time to raise a small portion of the roadway in the low spot we can provide an additional margin of safety at this location.”

While the roadway is closed for the extra work near the intersection, it made sense to include replacement of a nearby cross drain that had some issues.

“The cross drain is a maintenance issue that needs to be addressed, and with the temporary closure of the roadway, it is a good opportunity to safely make those repairs with no additional inconvenience to traffic,” McClearn said.

The closure on KY 1069/Stagecoach Road is at mile point 1.632 between Robert Lane and J.D. Buchanan Road. Message boards have been placed at the site to alert motorists to the planned closure.

Work on the New Brown Badgett Loop Connector Overpass started April 8. The new structure will serve as an extra entrance point to Madisonville North Hopkins High School from KY 1069/Stagecoach Road. It replaces a wooden structure that was closed to traffic in October 2007. The new concrete bridge will be able to handle school bus traffic, which was unable cross the old structure...

Alignment of the new structure pulls off of Stagecoach Road north of the existing bridge. The new bridge crosses the railroad tracks at an angle and ties into Brown Badgett Loop south of the old bridge location. Much of the remaining work at the site involves construction of the connector road and a new connecting point to KY 1069, as well as connecting Brown Badgett Loop to the new bridge.

Once the work is completed on KY 1069, the contractor will allow the reworked areas to settle for about a week before applying a finish coat of asphalt. McClearn says he’s optimistic the new bridge and connector can be ready for traffic around December 1st.

Jim Smith Contracting Company, LLC, is the prime contractor on the $1.8 million project.
