WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (4/24/13) - Webster County High School softball team traveled to Hancock County on Saturday to participate in the Lady Hornet Classic, winning 1-of-3 games. The Lady Trojans travel to district-rival Henderson County on Thursday and host Hopkinsville Friday. WCHS will Madisonville-North Hopkins next Monday in Dixon.

Webster County 7
Hancock County 6

The Lady Trojans opened the Lady Hornet Classic with a thrilling victory over the host Lady Hornets Saturday morning at Hancock County High School. Webster scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and then held-off a seventh inning rally by Hancock to secure the victory.

Maddy Yates gave the Lady Trojans a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when she drew a two-out walk, stole second and third and then scored on a wild pitch. WCHS made it 3-0 in the fourth when Kolbi Edens stroked a one-out double, followed by an RBI-double from Yates. She scored one out later on a run-scoring single from Georgia Keeney.

Hancock picked up a single run in the fourth and then tied the game at 3-all with a two-run rally in the bottom of the fifth off WCHS starter Kayleigh Woods. Webster’s game-winning rally came in the sixth when Yates drilled a one-out single, followed by consecutive singles from Kelsey Mays and Keeney plus a HCHS error to make it 5-3.

Christian Papineau put the finishing touches on the uprising with a two-run homer, her third ‘long ball’ of the season, giving the Lady Trojans a 7-3 lead.

Hancock County rallied in its final at-bat with three runs thanks to a WCHS error, a double and a two run homer from Brea Basham. But Woods enticed a pair of pop-ups to end the threat and give Webster the victory.

Papaineau, Yates and Keeney all had two hits in the victory while Edens and Kaylyn Winders added a double each.

Webster County 3
Whitesville Trinity 7

Webster just couldn’t get the clutch hit when needed in their second game of the Lady Hornet Classic. Webster had seven hits in the game but also stranded seven runners. Kaylyn Winders stroked three hits while Jerrick Jones, Kayleigh Wood, Kolbi Edens, Kelsey Mays and Georgia Keeney had one hit each. It was a great start for the Lady Trojans as they put a ‘deuce’ on the scoreboard in the top of the first on a walk to Papineau and a single from Jones. They both came around to score on a double from Winders. But the WCHS bats went silent until the fifth. That’s when Winders unloaded on a fastball and sent it over the leftfield fence for her second home run of the season, giving Webster a 3-0 lead. Winders drove in all three runs for Webster in the contest. But that would be all the runs the Lady Trojans could muster the rest of the way. Trinity erupted in the bottom of the frame with six runs off WC starter Edens. 11 hitters went to the plate, smacking four hits, two walks along with two WC fielding errors to earn the 6-3 lead. Whitesville picked up a single run in the sixth for the final.

Webster County 4
Owensboro 5

The Lady Trojans dropped a heartbreaker in their final game of the tourney, as a seventh-inning rally fell a bit short against a strong Lady Red Devil squad. Webster jumped on top in the bottom of the second with a 2-0 lead. Edens led off with a single, followed by another single from Yates. Both came around to score when a bunt from Kesley Mays was misplayed by the OHS defense, giving Webster the 2-0 lead.

Owensboro answered with three runs in the top of the third and then took a 5-2 lead in the top of the sixth. WCHS trimmed the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the frame when Edens walked and scored one out later on another Owensboro throwing error.

The Lady Trojans put together a rally in their final at-bat in hopes of the victory.

Winders led off with a single and Wood brought her home with an RBI-double. But OHS hurler Courtney Brown retired three of the next four WC hitters to squash the rally and give the Lady Devils the one-run victory. Winders and Edens led the WCHS offense with three singles each while Jones blasted a double along with singles from Wood, Yates and Mays.
